Bird Dog on Thursday?

I got up early for our walk on wednesday morning to get it done before it got too hot. We had a bit of excitement when we got back. I let MaggieMae loose in the back yard and she caught a baby bird (a robin about half grown). It was hurt but I am not sure if it was before she caught it or if she hurt it. I told her to let it go (and again she surprised me when she did what I said). Then she laid down next to it, "guarding it". I had to grab her collar to bring her into the house. Next I went out to get the shovel. I wasn't sure if I should whack it and put it out of it's misery (which I would hate doing) or just shovel it up and try to put it out of the yard, and let nature take it's course. It was till alive but momma bird was squawking at me, and I managed to just kind of shoo it (it moved as I neared it) out of the yard and it went through the fence and into the neighbor's yard, and stayed there. Before I let MaggieMae out again I checked to see if it had moved from near the fence and it had not, but it did when I went near it. It actually hopped up on some boards, so maybe it will live anyway. I guess it's up to God, as is all life. It's His to give or take away.

I thougth later maybe I should have tried to take a picture, but then a wounded bird didn't seem like a good picture to post. So this is another pictureless post. I am thinking of updating with a new camera soon, maybe in a week or so. Hopefully then I will have good pictures to post occasionally!

Action Shot (DOT)

Late post, and short. Just came back this afternoon from a 2 and 1/2 day trip to see relatives. One new pic of Maggie. First action shot I've really gotten of her so far. :-) That's it for today.

Home Improvement

From this:

To this:

My son-in-law came and cut down a small maple (where the stool with the pot of petunias is sitting) and took out the two hedges. Still need to get the stumps ground down as they had roots to China and he couldn't pull them out with his truck, no matter how wet we got the roots. I plan on putting in more flowers there, and a lattice vertically next to the front door to protect the front stoop from winter snows. I was just not tall enought to keep trimming the hedges myself. Did it once last year, and that was enough! I am glad they are out. And it will keep the guys from the town busy when they come around with the chipper/shredder!

(DOT) Max Is Back!

The above picture is my daughter's cat that wandered off last September (Max, aka Maxwell Snugglepuss) and just came back last week. Nine months gone! They had no idea where he'd gone. They found him in their living room last sat. night when they came in from a bonfire they'd had (door was open)! Seems he's a little thinner and a little lighter in color, but it's definitely their Max! I told my daughter "if he could talk!"

Last night on our walk, MaggieMae met a cat for the first time (that I know of, here anyway). One of my neighbors has a beautiful black cat, outdoor cat. We stopped so I could talk to the neighbor, and MaggieMae of course was interested in the cat. She got close enough to "sniff her butt"..... lol. Then the cat kept her at the end of the amount of leash I'd given her. I was glad to see she was not in the same mode as when she sees a rabbit. I was concerned about Maggie Mae going to my daughter's house now with Max back, however with MaggieMae meeting the neighbor's cat successfully, I can now think of taking her to my daughters again, and not worry about her meeting Max. Of course he still has his claws so if she meets him and gets too agressive I am sure he will put her in her place! But I am so glad you are home Max!!

Gorgeous Peonies

Just picked today! They were about to start going out, so I thought if I was going to pick some I better get on it! Very few ants this year, so I think I am safe bringing them in the house. I guess I will find out! But couldn't resist trying to bring some in. They are soooo beautiful!

The Mighty Hunter (and Happy Dogs on Thursday to all you "hunting dogs").

Well, I had worried needlessly that MaggieMae would get bored because the little critters seemed to be avoiding our yard. Besides the pesky squirrels still coming around when I fill the bird feeder and then running up a tree as she goes after them, and the little chipmunks who taunt her by running back and forth on the other side of the fence in front of her, there are also dumb rabbits around... at least one in particular. It wandered into the fenced area last thursday night and when I let her out for her "last out" for then night it nearly met it's demise!

It was dark out and as I called her to come in, I saw her standing at a distance and could tell she had something white in her mouth. I grabbed my flashlight and she'd come closer to the door by then and I saw she had this same rabbit by the scruff of the neck, it's white belly facing me. I told her "Maggie, let it go." She did! She put it down in front of her, and it started to move and she picked it up again. I repeated, "Maggie, let it go." This time a little more forcefully. She again let it go (to my amazement) and it ran with her chasing after it but it did get away, and through the fence. I think she was quite pleased with herself for being such a mighty hunter... but I did not relish the idea of cleaning her up or a dead rabbit! It was enough the next day I found bits of fur in the yard, and she was trying to eat them! LOL.

The next day I was playing with her with her tug toy (polar bear, thanks again Tina) and we were involved in quite a playful struggle. So I thought I'd try the "let it go" command again... She looked me right in the eye and hung on to it, as if to say, "You can't fool me, this is MY toy!" So it did not work then. One other time I did try it again with a toy, she let it go, and I threw it for her to "go get it" and she just left it lay. I guess it's all up to her when she decides it's important or not... LOL. While I have met some dogs that are sweet but dumb as stumps, she is definitely not one of them! I thank God and the humans again that made it possible for her and I to be together.

Flowers on My Deck

Just wanted to share some pics of the annuals in pots on the corner of my deck. The clouds are my first attempt to photograph them. My daughter has a such a camera eye, and I am sure she didn't get it from me!
